Strong article, Andrew. This should bury anyone’s last inkling of hope that President Obama provides a sea change in economic policy. Where our two-party system is, a huge difference in actual governing doesn’t exist from administration to administration.

He was voted in for change. Some of his voters consciously wanted new or larger government programs and more government regulation. Well, we already had large government entitlements, spending and regulation as your article points out. So the philosophy is continuing and now we’re spending at the highest rate in human history hoping Keynesian economics will work. Sometimes, all you can say is: Go Ducks!

You forgot to mention that Barack Obama is African-American and it was once said that a black man would be president only when pigs fly, then in his first 100 days in office – bam, swine flu! But really, it should not be understated the significance of electing a black man into office. It was virtually unfathomable a generation or two ago and is a testament to the progress we have made as an American culture and as a humanity. That’s the Type of change BO brings… he brings the world together. We get along with other countries again, Obama inspires the youth all around the world. Sure, the traditional leaders in mid-east countries denounce Obama’s significance, but the hyper-informed generation that comes after them are mesmerized that the American president’s middle name is Hussein. We must recognize that our Universe is progressive in all its ways (change is the only constant) and change primarily occurs between generations (in a human sense). What Obama brings to the table goes so much further than fiscal policy. And did you really believe BO was going to cut spending? I mean he’s for social justice and universal health care and all that liberal rubbish. I think Afghanistan is a waste of time, but we (As an American culture) still have a lot of hatred for OBL so BO will have the political will to continue a worthless objective, primarily to satisfy the conservative ‘patriots’ as they call themselves. Going into Iraq my brother thought that ultimately a positive outcome in Iraq would be Bush’s legacy… Having been there for 4 months interacting with the tribal leaders, civil war is more of a possibility than 9/11 part II. With BO in charge the US will regain respect around the world and evil will one way or another be brought to justice… preferably by just letting bygones be bygones .

It is certainly a good sign for race relations that the American population was willing to elect an black president. And what it means for African Americans is something I know I can’t fully understand. However, what I was discussing were simply how his policies are not much different that Bush’s. Yes, I didn’t expect Obama to cut spending, but I wanted to emphasize that increasing spending is nothing new. It’s not change. Bush increased spending and Obama is doing the same, thus the status quo.
