This study underscores why it’s important for both sexes to be able to take time off for the birth and raising of a child. Currently, it’s a self-perpetuating cycle: the woman is the only one in the family with the ability to take off months for parental leave (many men do take time off, but it’s less time and usually comes out of accrued vacation), so when she returns to work, she’s less competitive for top projects and promotions compared to others who never took the time off. If both parents took equal time off, there wouldn’t be this gender discrepancy.
