Previously on SwiftEconomics we saw some Star Wars libertarianism, but apparently Star Wars also has a fascist side. While the Intergalactic Empire is a fairly obvious analogy to the Nazi’s, George Lucas couldn’t help but emulate what is perhaps the most famous Nazi propaganda film ever made.
If you look at the closing scene from the original Star Wars—where Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca are walking down the aisle to get their medals from Princess Leia—it is almost a scene by scene reenactment of the final part of Leni Riefenstahl 1935 tribute to Adolf Hitler, Triumph of the Will. The movie is actually thought to be one of the best made for its time. The only little problem with it is, of course, that it’s a propaganda film for an evil, totalitarian regime. Oops.
You can go ahead and compare for yourself:
Triumph of the Will (Scene begins at 1:29:44)
Or you can compare the two side by side, as the Youtube vlogger HeroOfTheSovietUnion has thankfully spliced the two together for us. I honestly don’t know what George Lucas was thinking:
